Spring into Summer Ayr Home Tour

Keep checking this space! The Home Tour will be back in 2007 on Saturday May 26, 2007.

Pinnacle House: 128 Mitchell Street

The “Pinnacle House” started life over 160 years ago and at one point was the Presbyterian Manse. The original house was a double-brick post and beam bungalow with wide plank pine floors. In December 2003, the interior and contents were destroyed by an electrical fire and resulting smoke damage. Following the fire, the interior of the home was completely restored and renovated including the addition of a second floor. Ten foot ceilings, wooden trim and the uncovered pine floors from the original house abut rooms with heated ceramic tile floors, cherry floors and cherry cupboards. The original posts and beams now stand on the outdoor deck as a salute to the past.

House of the Future: 146 Mitchell Street

For the Martin family, their focus is on living in harmony with the environment. The walls of their home are constructed from insulated concrete forms. The floors are concrete and finished with an acid stain. Radiant heat powered by a condensing boiler warms the house. An instantaneous water heater and ductless split system air conditioner complete the home’s systems. Refinished furniture, nine foot ceilings, attention to detail, and interesting paint treatments combine to make a warm, ecologically friendly home. The wood for the window sills, table and bar in the lower level was reclaimed from the St. Lawrence River.

Three Generations: 186 Mitchell Street

Since she was a little girl, Holly Currie has had the unique privilege of living with her parents and her maternal grandparents. This shared home on Mitchell Street is the third home that they have lived in together since 1983. They custom designed this Florida bungalow home in 1999. It is bright and airy with two distinct living areas including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and sitting rooms all with large windows and walkout doors to the extensive gardens, pond and gazebo. The lower level of the home is spacious with a wine making area, bar, dining room and sitting room. This home provides privacy while encouraging extended family living.

The Bachelor Pad: 1292 Swan Street

Built in 1959 as a woodworking shop, the building was purchased by enterprising B. J. Jordan in 2005. The Jordan family converted the upper level of the uninsulated shop into a 700 square foot home. This bright and airy home maximizes use of space. The large garage door was replaced by a bow window. Sliding glass doors off the kitchen open onto mature trees and provide a view of an impressive collection of vintage lawn tractors. B.J. doesn’t have far to go to work – his home sits atop a full shop which he uses to repair and maintain his fleet of vehicles which support his lawn and snow service. His home offers a glimpse into single living in Ayr.

Southwestern Flair: 23 Simone Place

The Kuntz home in the heart of the Nith River Way subdivision is a southwestern treasure. Built in 1989, the home has been extensively renovated by Joanne and Brad Kuntz over the past few years. The deluxe kitchen features radiant heated floors, reclaimed pine cabinets, hammered copper farm sinks imported from Mexico, a fourteen foot reclaimed-pine bar, cathedral ceiling and huge windows overlooking the deck, hot tub and backyard. A sliding barn makes the library a quiet hideaway. While the kitchen is the current showpiece of the home, renovations continue upstairs with the recent completion of the master bedroom suite and the home office.

The Country Manor: 3133 Greenfield Road

Having raised their family in restored farm houses, sixteen years ago Marilynn and Don Carey purchased an acre lot overlooking the historic Greenfield Mill Race and set upon building a custom home. The result was a grand home with an impressive oak spiral staircase, oak trim, a formal dining room and a main floor master bedroom. The Carey home is furnished with a mix of old and new. Two bedrooms on the upper level accommodate guests and grandchildren. The lower level boasts a pool table, a reclaimed brick fireplace and an office. The backyard is a haven for people and birds alike with a swimming pool, gazebo, pond and stone waterfall all overlooking the Nith River.
